I wonder if the important threshold is actually much higher than 1x. If using cryptography becomes cheaper than audits, trusted intermediaries, fraud, reconciliation, etc., then even 5x might already make sense for a lot of real-world applications. We may not need to get anywhere close to 1+ε for the economics to flip.
