The Lightning Network’s growth can help reduce average transaction fees on Bitcoin’s main chain. By enabling users to conduct many small, instant payments off-chain, Lightning decreases the number of transactions that need to be recorded directly on the blockchain. This offloading eases network congestion, which often drives up fees during busy times. However, opening and closing Lightning channels still require on-chain transactions, so fee reduction depends on balanced usage. As adoption grows and more payments shift off-chain, the main chain can prioritize larger, less frequent transactions, leading to generally lower fees and improved scalability.
