There were many of us on the boat;
Some strained the sail,
Others together pushed
Mighty oars into the depths. In the silence
Bending over the rudder, our clever helmsman
Steered the heavy boat in silence;
And I, full of carefree faith,
I sang to the swimmers... Suddenly the bosom of the waves
A noisy whirlwind crushed on the fly...
Both the helmsman and the swimmer perished! -
Only I, the mysterious singer,
Thrown ashore by a storm,
I sing the old hymns
And dry my damp robe
In the sun under a cliff.
