Agra Fort is a massive and historic fortress that served as the main residence of the Mughal emperors for generations. Its history spans from its origins as a simple brick fort to its zenith as a grand imperial palace.
š Key Historical Phases
Pre-Mughal Origins: Before the Mughals, a brick fort known as Badalgarh stood on the site. It was held by various rulers, including Sikandar Lodi, the first Sultan of Delhi to shift his capital to Agra.
Babur & Humayun: After the First Battle of Panipat in 1526, the first Mughal emperor, Babur, captured the fort. His son, Humayun, was crowned emperor here in 1530.
Akbar's Great Reconstruction (1565ā1573): The fort in its present-day form was commissioned by Emperor Akbar. Recognizing the strategic importance of Agra, he made it his capital and began a massive reconstruction of the ruined Badalgarh in 1565. Using red sandstone, it took 4,000 builders eight years to complete this military stronghold and royal palace.
