“I see you.”
Walking around in a general malaise. Turning away whenever an anniversary, video begins to play. Trying to keep it together. Just one more hour until work is over and we can let everything can relax.
We remember when the world was different you and I. Each of us struggled to integrate our “before” with the harsh realities of our “after”. We work on this in the midst of many who have only ever known this world to be the way it is.
“Never Forget.”
A loaded plaintive that is now a hollow, meaningless abstraction.
“How could I?”
When I close my eyes the after-images sharpen my memories. Cars driving on sidewalks. Men openly weeping. A woman searching for her husband. Columns of dark acrid soot carelessly filling the sky and our lungs.
“I can’t…”
Unless I am checked into a memory care facility 30 years from now, I can’t forget. But for a few minutes more I can pretend it never happened and live inside a bygone era guarded by hubris, ignorance and invincibility.
