When I gave this birthday gift to one of my students she looked at it skeptically. She wondered if I had some nefarious intent behind it. “No,” I assured her, “my motivation is benevolent. I wrote you a birthday message inside the dictionary with a few academic vocabulary words. I bookmarked each word so you could discern their meanings.”
“We don’t need this many words.” she protested. “Why can’t we just make the words we use mean more things?”
I was in disbelief. An increased vocabulary would improve her cognitive abilities and render her arguments more persuasive.
She packed up the fidgets, Pikachu Funko Pop figure and Highlights magazine but left the dictionary on her desk. “There’s no room in my backpack for that heavy thing. I’ll bring it home on Monday.”
I was quite dubious about her stated intention.
