Last week Trent, my para-educator, and I wore the same school-spirit shirt on the same day. One of our students said, “That’s so ironic.”
I applaud them for using academic vocabulary in their everyday speech. I gently corrected them and explained that it was a coincidence that we both wore the same thing. Both of us together(co) had the same thing occur(incident).
For irony to occur, there needed to be a dichotomy between their either his or my expectation and what actually happened. An example might be if I exclaimed at the start of the day that “Nobody ever wears the same shirt as me.” And then Trent walked in wearing the same shirt.
