Can Brain-Computer Interfaces Unlock Consciousness in Patients with Locked-In Syndrome?: Brain-machine interfaces (BMIs) hold significant promise in unlocking consciousness in patients with locked-in syndrome, allowing them to communicate and interact with the outside world. Recent advances in neuroprosthetics show that patients can control devices, even with limited motor function. Future developments could enhance their ability to express thoughts or regain some form of communication, though full consciousness restoration is still a distant goal.
