In the first picture is a famous Crab Nebula, a supernova remnant that exploded in 1054 and was captured in visual light by the Hubble Space Telescope. The second picture is also Crab, but in X-ray. There, you might notice some white streams flowing out of the center. These are jets from a neutron star's polar caps.
