Its roots and leaves are loaded with powerful indole alkaloids — including reserpine, ajmaline and serpentine — the same class of compounds that inspired some of the first modern blood-pressure drugs. Traditionally it’s been used to calm fevers, digestive upsets and even agitation. Today scientists are still exploring its antihypertensive, antiplasmodial and sedative-like effects in lab and early clinical studies.
