Hierapolis was a prominent ancient Greek city in southwestern Anatolia, celebrated for its sacred hot springs and venerated as a healing center. The city's vast and well-preserved necropolis, one of the largest in Turkey, features a variety of tombs, including distinctive circular burial mounds known as tumuluses. These Hellenistic-era tumuluses, characterized by their earthen mounds covering stone-built chambers, served as monumental tombs for prominent citizens. Today, the extensive ruins of Hierapolis, including its impressive theater, temples, and the remarkable necropolis with its tumuluses, are a UNESCO World Heritage Site alongside the natural travertine terraces of Pamukkale.
