The ancient capital of the Aksumite Empire, one of the great civilisations of the ancient world, trading with Rome, Persia, and India. Its towering granite obelisks (stelae) — some over 1,700 years old — remain standing today. Aksum is also considered the home of the Ark of the Covenant by Ethiopian tradition.
