One afternoon, someone sat staring at a message they hadn’t replied to. Part of them wanted to say yes immediately, to step into something new and see where it would lead. But at the same time, there was a quiet hesitation pulling in the opposite direction, reminding them of the risks, the uncertainty, the things that might not go as expected. Neither feeling was weak. Both felt equally real, equally convincing. So they stayed there for a while, not because they didn’t care, but because they cared in two different ways at once. That strange pull of wanting and not wanting something at the same time is what ambivalent feels like.
