Saint John the Baptist
Syncretism series in Venezuela
Shot 5
Another view of the drums. Here you can see that they come in different shapes and sizes. They are placed near the Catholic church from where Juan Bautista emerges accompanied by his devotees. This tradition of African descent is pure syncretism. The main idea was to resist the Spanish colonists and maintain the beliefs of their ancestors through Catholic religious images. The drumbeat, more than a musical movement, served to communicate in code and speak without the colonists knowing what they were really saying.
The series consists of 23 photographs, one per day.
