I’ve gone from instinctive distrust of “progress” as a frame for change to an alternate effectual theory of change: Progress theory: People try to create change they think is good, and others do the same, and there is conflict over the definition of progress”good change” that nets out as consensus progress or decline. FAFO theory: People try to find instabilities in present equilibria that lend themselves to small perturbations having large effects. Then they exercise those instabilities and filter and sort the consequences into good/bad/ugly. Good vs bad may net out either way but the biggest changes come from things that simply look ugly at first. When they settle, an athletics and meanings shift in ways that alter definitions of good and bad. This is why conservatism is best understood as a generalized disgust response to all ugliness, and liberalism as a leaning into ugliness, processing it into a new beauty, with a new conservatism and disgust response attached. It’s a mistake to think of the disgust response as a fixed thing with genetic hardcoding. Disgust is a repeatedly reprogrammed response. Progress IS this repeated reprogramming. If you don’t get this, you’ll make bad forecasting errors AND be miserable.
