Mercury is the closest planet to the Sun and the smallest in the Solar System. It has a rocky surface covered with craters, similar to Earth’s Moon. Because it has almost no atmosphere, temperatures on Mercury vary greatly between day and night. It completes an orbit around the Sun in just 88 Earth days. Mercury has no moons and no rings. Despite its small size, it has a dense iron core, making it the second most dense planet after Earth.
