Big controversy: Trump has publicly attacked Somali immigrants including Ilhan Omar and the broader Somali community in Minnesota calling them “garbage” and saying they “contribute nothing.” 
He also announced the end of legal protections for many Somalis (Temporary Protected Status) and pushed for aggressive immigration enforcement in Minnesota a move critics say targets hundreds of thousands of people arbitrarily. 
On the other side: local leaders and officials including Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota condemned Trump’s remarks, calling them racist, demeaning and harmful to social cohesion. 
What this shows: This isn’t just about policy. it’s about identity and respect. Attacking entire communities undermines trust, stokes fear, and deepens divisions in a country built on diversity.
