With everything happening between Iran and Israel, I’ve been trying to find a way to put this all into words. Here’s the best I’ve got. War isn’t black and white. It’s incredibly nuanced and complicated, with multiple realities being held simultaneously for all those involved. I’m sick of the all-encompassing narratives that demand choosing a side. There are a number of dual, conflicting positions held by many Iranians like myself, such as: YES, we’ve been fighting for regime change for over 40 years. NO, I don’t believe an external player with no regard for our people will be the solution. YES, we believe justice should be served to the Islamic Republic who have hurt more of its own people than anyone else. NO, I don’t believe bombing innocent civilians and calling it unfortunate collateral is the way. YES, we want a free Iran. NO, I don’t believe war with Israel is the catalyst. I FIRMLY reject the notion that Netanyahu, backed by the US et al, is a savior. It’s a tone-deaf, delusional insult to the efforts and losses over the last 46 years. AND finally, you can have loved ones from different religions and believe in their right to life without supporting oppressive, unhinged governments. This is NOT about religion — it’s about power. Fundamentally disagreeing with both governments doesn’t make you antisemitic, xenophobic etc. I’m exhausted by this lazy narrative void of all critical thinking. Away from that critique, I love my family and the ancient civilization I’m proud to call my homeland. I worry deeply for their safety and its preservation, which we’ve seen devastated in cases like Afghanistan and Iraq. That said, I’m still operating with immense privilege. Recall that Iranian CIVILIANS living in Iran have always been the victim here. It’s easy for me to type this from the comfort of my home which I call the US. Meanwhile, my loved ones are caught between two sources of violence every single day — from international perceptions, and vitriol to their own unjust government who has never served their interests, despite this being their only duty. So, respectfully, outta here with anything other than a call for de-escalation for all the innocent human lives caught in the middle of this schism. There are never, ever winners in war.

I think we’re in a place where we can move away from TVL being THE metric for L1s and L2s. From a retrospect, TVL came from an era where DeFi was the only web3 vertical, and the only business model was about yield (based on AUM). That said, the business model of chains is about transactions. Finally we’re seeing activities that generates usage of a chain (Social, ID, Supply Chain, Gig Economy, DePIN) where other upcoming applications may not increase TVL, but will still generate revenue for their blockchain ecosystem. From this standpoint, L1s/L2s are effectively virtual economies, and their resilience comes from a diversity of applications that provide services to each other. I’m happy that we’re now seeing a more vibrant and diverse economy of apps, one that I hope will attract and sustain with positive feedback loops. TVL alone can't reflect any of that.
