Bruges — Often called the (Venice of the North,) Bruges is a remarkably intact medieval trading city of canals, cobblestones, and Gothic belfries. In the 14th and 15th centuries it was one of the wealthiest and most important commercial cities in all of Europe — the birthplace of the Flemish school of painting and early European capitalism.
