The director of this film is Frank Darabont, the creator of The Shawshank Redemption and The Green Mile.
Darabont, who apparently has a firm belief in the concept of hope, made this film with a different and more ruthless approach compared to The Shawshank Redemption, trying to make the audience afraid of losing hope.
