American Airlines' regional strategy is fundamentally about hub stitching, using American Eagle to pull small and mid-sized catchment areas into its big banks at CLT, DFW, PHL, ORD, and MIA. These are all places where the real revenue is made on the onward itinerary. Ultra-short segments are valuable when they replace long drives and protect overall market share in contested short-haul corridors.
