Chinese paper-cutting is one of the oldest folk arts in China. Some people believe that the predecessor of paper-cutting can be traced back to the custom of women in the Han and Tang Dynasties using gold and silver foil to cut square shapes and paste them on their temples as decorations. The paper-cuts affixed to the windows are also called window grilles. Early paper-cutting was mostly seen in funerals, sacrifices and other ceremonies, and was probably related to Taoist spiritual mediums. For example, in Du Fu's "Peng Ya Xing", there is a clear record of "warm soup washes my feet, paper-cutting calls to my soul".
