OpenAI has introduced full support for the Model Context Protocol (MCP) in ChatGPT through a new Developer Mode, significantly expanding its capabilities. MCP, a standard established by Anthropic, allows AI tools to connect easily to any data source or application. Previously, ChatGPT could only receive and analyze data via MCP but could not perform write actions, limiting its functionality compared to competitors like Anthropic's Claude.
Now, with Developer Mode enabled, ChatGPT can fully interact with external systems, such as payment solutions, as demonstrated in OpenAI's demo video. However, this power comes with risks; unauthorized prompts could potentially exploit the system. OpenAI advises caution and restricts the full MCP feature to Plus and Pro subscribers on the web, warning that it is intended only for experienced developers. Local MCP server connections and desktop app support are not yet available.
