Balkh, Afghanistan — Known in antiquity as the (Mother of Cities,_ Balkh is one of the oldest cities in the world — continuously inhabited for over 3,500 years. It was a great centre of Zoroastrianism, Buddhism, and later Islam. Alexander the Great conquered it in 329 BC and married the Bactrian princess Roxana here. The Persian poet Rumi was born in Balkh in 1207. Today its ancient mud walls and ruins rise from the Afghan plain like ghosts of an unimaginable past.
