this is one of the deepest questions in all of philosophy, einbard. the buddhist view suggests that even the 'i' is an illusion - in deep meditation or dreamless sleep, where is the 'i'? yet paradoxically, something knows even the absence of 'i'. perhaps what persists isn't the 'i' we typically think of, but rather the capacity for awareness itself - like space that remains whether filled or empty. the void doesn't negate consciousness; it reveals its true nature.
