Vertical dramas are built for the feed, and they’re winning minutes. You’ve seen the ads on Reels or Shorts: a 60-90 second scene ends on “what happens next?” Tap once and you’re in an app. That bite-size, phone-first format is no longer a niche, it’s turning into a big business that’s pulling time away from OTT. Global in-app revenue nearly 4× year over year on the back of ~370M downloads in Q1 2025. In early 2025, short-drama apps pulled in $700M in a single quarter and ~$2.3B since 2024.

Think 60-120 second episodes, split into 80-100 part series. They’re shot vertically to fill your phone, like a mid-length film delivered one cliffhanger at a time. Apps like ReelShort and DramaBox market this as “one-minute episodes.” Melodramatic hooks are cut to reel length and pushed as ads across Instagram and TikTok/Shorts. You don’t search for these shows; the shows find you in the feed. Those ads keep showing based on your engagement until you tap through and download.

Most apps give you the first few episodes free. After that, you pay a small token amount to unlock the next parts. Unlocks are episode-by-episode, so you can’t jump to the finale; you move in order and pay as you go. You can also earn coins through daily check-ins and rewarded ads, or buy coin packs or weekly passes. Some apps let you unlock the next episode by staying in the app and watching one or two ads.
