Open source accelerates adoption, audits, and integrations, compounding network effects. Transparent codebases invite community contributions and faster bug discovery, lowering security risk. However, openness can reduce IP defensibility; moats must shift to network effects, standards, brand, and data. For infra protocols, open source is often a positive signal; for consumer apps, selective openness plus proprietary UX/data can work. Evaluate license (MIT/Apache vs. copyleft), contributor diversity, and review velocity to gauge vitality.
