This work is sometimes known by the title The Nativity, as it is an enigmatic painting and it is unclear whether it depicts the birth of Jesus Christ, with the Virgin Mary, the Baby Jesus, and Saint Anne. It is common for Georges de La Tour to treat religious themes as if they were genre scenes.
