Although Courbet never defined himself as a romantic painter, he created his first canvases under this influence.
It is unknown whether the title of this painting reflects the despair of the character, and therefore of the artist, or whether it is a theoretical exercise. This man, who was said to be in love with life, wanted to show his dark side.
