"The Astronomer" by Vermeer, reimagined.
Portraits of scientists were a popular subject in 17th-century Dutch painting.
The subject's profession is symbolized by the celestial globe (model by Jodocus Hondius) and the book on the table, entitled Institutiones Astronomicae Geographicae (or Metius' Manual), open at chapter III, a section in which the astronomer seeks inspiration from God. Finally, the painting on the wall evokes the discovery of Moses, representing knowledge and science.
