"Quince, Cabbage, Melon and Cucumber" by Juan Sánchez Cotán, reimagined. Cotán was a pioneer of Spanish still life painting. Some historians have suggested that he was inspired by his own ascetic Carthusian piety. Born in Orgaz, his art developed in a direction completely opposite to that of El Greco, whose altarpiece The Burial of the Count of Orgaz is located in the Cathedral of San Tomé in Toledo, where Cotán had a studio. Cotán's still lifes belong to his secular period, prior to his entry into the monastery, after which he devoted himself to religious painting, later deciding to leave the monastery and dying in Granada. This still life, with its austere simplicity, is similar to a vegetable altar. https://rodeo.club/post/7417978704330665984
