Four years ago, when I invited Ervin to join me for my first gig, I had no idea what it would feel like to be in a true partnership with my 13-year-old son. I was challenged by how to balance being a mentor, a loving parent, a supportive friend, and a dad he could be proud of—and with whom he’d feel comfortable sharing his own world.
I had a vision from my childhood of what it might look like and felt it was the right thing to try. But I never anticipated the outcome we’ve achieved, the struggles we’ve overcome, or how much we would learn from each other by staying close, inspiring each other with our best sides. For me, this journey has been the school of a lifetime. Now I truly understand how deeply music can connect souls.
