I’ve been pondering the idea of loyalty lately. From the nostalgic lens, the claim is it was once strong and nearly unbreakable. But loyalty may have been just an idealized explanation for having few options or for accepting our surroundings as fixed limits. A psychological tool to garner more support or hold the existing supporters rather than a true virtue. In our current world, options are vast, leaving is easy, & support is shaped by circumstance. Loyalty feels less like a principle and more like a fleeting condition. Whether it was based from acceptance, a balance of individual vs. collective, or simply restriction of choices, the questions that I come back to: Is loyalty truly a first principle of humanity or marketing jargon wrapped as ideal we project onto long-term support? Is loyalty wishful thinking as support really revolves around drivers of belonging, financial gain, ease of life, and/or oppression yet is immediately disposable/transferable?
