fascinating. I could never get over mercedes and edmond not ending up together. we all want to sleep easy in the happily ever after but dumas’ refusal to erase the injustice + mercedes being unwilling to subjugate herself to edmond’s mercy for love is a good frame, and is likely is part of why the story endured.
if “repetition risk is irrelevant once capacity is proven” what actions suffice to mitigate capacity? it’s an good paradox to ponder whether capacity, once proven, can ever be disavowed.
