Into the Heart of Borneo
A posh British duo follow some local guides up a river into the mountains of Borneo, encountering a wide range of human, animal, and topographical tribulations along the way.
It's fairly raw and unpolished compared to a lot of travel literature, but only in the sense that it wasn't sanitized and commercialized. Both the language and the content are full of quirky personality. The author must have found an editor who was willing to leave him with more or less total control. The result is a weirdly 19th-century-adventurer flavor, to the extent that the appearance of 80s era technology feels anachronistic.
I liked the balanced and human attitude the author maintained toward the population of Borneo. He treats them as complex people, somehow balancing precipitously between the chauvinistic baggage of the centuries before him and the bland hokey reverence of the decades that followed.
I like the actual adventure, the descriptions of wildlife, and the humor.
Great, weird book overall.
