A Walk in the Woods Bill Bryson narrates a summer spent hiking the Appalachian Trail, weaving in his usual history, humor, and commentary to enormous effect. You absolutely cannot go wrong with Bill Bryson. I've read almost all of his work and never have I found myself more than a few minutes from a chuckle or a captivating new fact. This is one of his finest works, presumably because it took him furthest from his comfort zone and exposed him to a broad swath of America, which he's had a bit of an on again off again relationship with. You never once fall into a boring or repetitive section. Even in the extensive accounts of hiking, the pacing is electric and a constant stream of adventures and information keep it fresh. From Chicken John to Granny Gatewood, from Katz to the Burger King manager who looks like his mother mated with Goofy, you meet tons of interesting characters along the way. A masterclass in travel literature. One of my favorites. Strongly recommended.
