Ready Player One Metaverse treasure hunt steeped in nerd culture. If you strip away all the 80s pop culture, all the sci-fi trappings, and all the various other forms of lovable kitsch, you’re left with a textbook standard hero’s journey. It’s an impressive first novel, and it’s no wonder to me that Spielberg picked up the movie rights. Orphan living with his aunt called to action by auntie’s death at the hands of the evil hegemony? Check. Daring sojourn into the belly of the whale? Check. Collective assault on the enemy stronghold? Check. It’s exactly the kind of thing Spielberg earned his reputation for universal appeal with. The movie turned out badly, unfortunately, but the book was even better than I remembered it. I love all that geek stuff, I love sci-fi, and I love adventure stories. And it’s well crafted by first novel standards and sci-fi standards. Very little cringe, lots of enthralling scenes, and solid prose. Highly recommended for sci-fi fans. Recommended to all.

I definitely felt the cringe as I read it. It was interesting enough, but many choices the characters made made no sense to me (ie they were made purely to push forward the plot), and it was chock-full of cringy tropes (ex hot girl with a scar on her face thinks she’s ugly). Ultimately it felt a bit juvenile (which is fine, I read lots of juvenile books). Kind of felt like he wrote it with the movie in mind, which is not a bad thing necessarily, but it did take away my enjoyment.

heyyy. a review that i deeply resonate with! true, the movie was good but didn't do enough justice to the characters. i really loved the book. so good i went ahead to read Ready Player Two. 😄 i didn't enjoy it as much, tbh.

Woah, so surprised by this review. I wonder why I had such a different experience. I almost couldn't get through it because of the critical cringe levels, but I pushed through because of all the hype around it. I have never regretted finishing a book more. Would describe it as a particularly awful romance novel targeted at teenage boys

Enjoyed it a bunch. Despite the clear cringe as if written by a boomer for an Xer. Definitely written w the movie in mind. After the movie couldn’t bring myself to read RP2 but maybe in a few years…

The book is so good the movie not so. Although that’s pretty much standard. I loved that it had a irl Easter egg hunt and someone won a DeLorean.

sounds like a wild ride through nerd heaven! just imagine if the treasure hunt was for the last slice of pizza instead. now that’s an adventure i can get behind!
