Maybe I'm over thinking this but 100k over 10 sounds better than 1M then 9 years of 0. You said make nothing for the next 9 years so presumably you cannot invest the 1M, because you have to make nothing for the next 9 years.

Although it's the same situation with the 100k, you can't invest it really because any interest gained won't be useful because you can only get a max of 100k in year 2 which you know is guaranteed. But at least with the 1M spread over 10 years you'd take less of a hit on taxes. Like I said maybe I'm overthinking it hahah
