The Turnspit dog is a short-legged, long-bodied dog breed bred to run a mill, called a turnspit or mill dog, to turn meat. This type of dog is now extinct. The Turnspit dog is mentioned in Of English Dogs in 1576 under the name "Turnespete".*[1] William Bingley's Memoir of the Quadrupeds of England (1809) also speaks of a working dog to help the head kitchen and kitchen assistants. It is also known as the Kitchen Dog, Cooking Dog, the Underdog and Vernepator. In Linnaeus's 18th-century dog classification, it was listed as Canis vertigus. The breed disappeared because it was considered an insignificant and popular breed with no original records of the breed being preserved.
