I would say that apple and everyone else started to design like Dieter Rams

Apple’s influence is incomparable. They basically pioneered the simplicity trend imo. They have user-friendly UX/UI down to the T. Everyone wants to be like Apple.

apple has been leading hardware and software design for 40 years, still is. Everyone else just follows.

I used to work for a large financial institution a few years ago, and every time they’d need slides the task would always be to “Make it Apple-like”, even though they had a very strong brand of their own by then :)

Apple design is a lot more humane, they don't put anything extra for pure profit or marketing - only if it truly adds value for the human experience of the product.

Steve was a visionary no doubt about that. Pushed (and abused I shall add) his team for clean, sublime designs way ahead of their time. Everyone else followed suit.

everyone started to design like apple. look at the back of samsung phones now compared to just maybe 5 years ago. also, i still remember when other stores started adopting apples retail store aesthetics. in my humble opinion

It’s definitely been the first option for quite awhile. Since pre iOS days I’ve seen so many clients asking for something to just be more apple-inspired. Seems to be changing now as more brands and projects try to havepersonality and unique recognizable style. Apple will have to reevaluate

That's actually a difficult question. In software it is clearly the latter (it was Microsoft who started using flat design language on top of their weird OS). In hardware it feels like everyone is following Apple, but that's more difficult to establish.

Minimalism was (and still is) super trendy, but… Apple was on the forefront of this phenomenon. A but it zeitgeist. A bit of vision.
